Because dating is such a personal and emotive topic, we often find ourselves grappling with internal conflict about which way to go. Many people talk about the battle between the head and the heart , especially when dealing with dating decisions.
Should you listen to your heart and focus on the feelings and chemistry, the grey areas and the spiritual sense of what just feels right? Or, should you listen to your head and focus on the facts and evidence, the clear signs and probability of what is likely to work out?
The Head and the Heart is an American indie folk band. They were formed in the summer of by Josiah Johnson (vocals, guitar, percussion) and Jonathan.
Jonathan Russell, co-founder of the band The Head and The Heart, doesn’t care about sleeping on couches or looking stupid. He’s willing to do what it takes to make his music. A lot of these things are deterring factors for a lot of people. The Head and The Heart may not be the biggest band in the world yet, but they’ve definitely made a mark. The band’s most recent album, “Signs of Light,” debuted at No.
It’s a long way from Russell’s first real connection to music, listening to the car radio on trips across Florida to visit his grandparents. He has all these ballads and I remember at a young age getting hooked on them, these sentimental love ballads. I think that was when I was realizing something that was inside of me, you know? Russell didn’t start playing music on his own until he was 18 or so, but there was something there. He moved from Fredericksburg, Va.
One of the women introduced Russell to lesser-heard songs by John Lennon, Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes and other artists and also let him use a small recording studio she had set up. But I would vamp on one chord for four minutes and then go back and overdub certain things. If I ever went into a falsetto the dog would howl with me and I would record that with a delay pedal and make it sound all psychedelic.
It took both The Head and The Heart to make the band a success
There is a certain sound that became popular in indie music four or five years ago that seemed to have sprung forth in reaction to the gloomy mood of the Great Recession. The songs often feature swelling choruses and invoke a spirit that rallies against the dying of the light. Instead, they seem more contemplative about the state of the world and their place in it.
When we first talked to Seattle-based indie folk rockers The Head and the Heart, the band was still basking in the success of its well-received.

I am a self proclaimed emotional woman. Feelings have always fascinated me, and I spend a great deal of time trying to figure them out, going along with them for the ride, and discussing them in great detail to gain a clearer perspective. So it comes as no surprise then that when it comes to my love life, feelings have always played a key role in my decisions. I have chased down bad boys and emotionally unavailable people simply based on the amount of sparks I felt when they walked in a room.

Podcast: Play in new window Download Duration: — We welcome Season 5 with an incredible conversation with John Van Epp! Although the conversation in this specific episode does not reference these topics , we are still grieving with the world right now. We are hurting with our world in the face of COVID but moreover right now we are pained alongside our black brothers and sisters. We are grieved, heartbroken, and sick over the injustices and acts of hatred regarding the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless others within the black community…murders and injustices that have been going on not just in this last year, but for hundreds of years.
Not only do we mourn, but we are committed to doing even better as a community, podcast, and ministry when it comes to talking about social injustice, racism, white privilege and white supremacy, as well as many other conversations surrounding these topics. We wholeheartedly support the movement for equality and justice and we commit to being joining forces and standing with our black community to use our ministry as a voice to fight against racism, not just today but day after day after day until we break the terrible bonds of racism in our country.
We want to be clear, we are not leading this cause. Our role is rather to listen and learn from our black brothers and sisters who have carved the path. To follow black leaders, friends, artists, voices, and creators who have already paved the way, begging for change to happen for hundreds of years. As for future of the podcast, we are actively looking for more diversity in our guest lineup and plan on having more episodes regarding race and ethnicity in dating.
We would love to invite YOU, our amazing listeners into this dialogue as well. John Van Epp is a therapist, former adjunct professor, author and lecturer.
